Sarnia
Hash House Harriers
Easy Running For Easy People
Hashtory
We are having problems remembering anything but, we do know we've
been like this since Sept. 11th of 1988.
As soon as we get a flash back we'll add it to this page.
A a h h h , the memories are slowly coming back. Let's see here.....
It's now been close to 10 years since that fatefull day in May of 1988.
Two Sarnia (Canada) area residents, Tom Chesher and Jerry Baljeu woke up
somewhat late one afternoon to wonderful fragrances of Jasmine, much laughter
from the pool grounds and one hell of a hang-over. Obviously, in need of
fresh air and perhaps some exercise, they contacted the hotel manager where
they were staying, in their search for a suitable jogging area.
He
suggested that today being a Monday they should consider running with the
local Hash House Harriers who were meeting at 4p.m.. It should only cost
about 5 bucks including a bus ride to somewhere, beer on arrival, follow
some sort of a cross-country trail marked by shredded paper and at the
end more beer. Just what was needed.Well they did the run, where again
they met their hotel manager none other than Lady Di, now a past Grand
Master of the Pattaya
(Thailand) Hash . The return flight, back to Canada was scheduled out
of Bangkok the very next morning but having such a great time at their
first hash plus a few too many Klosters at the T.Q. it was decided to take
Lady Di's advise and stay another week and do another run the next Monday.
Just befor leaving Pattaya
, Jerry bought one of Magic's
World Hash Guides and when Tom & Jerry where safe back home in
Sarnia they were able to contact the Detroit
HHH and they ran with them and also were named Scorecard and Gypsy.
Plans were made to start a Hash group in Sarnia and on September 11th.
1988, the Sarnia Hash House Harriers, now lovingly known as the "Chemical
Waste Hash" had their run #1 and #2, out of the Brittany Bar. A dozen
hashers from Detroit attended with the intentions of reclaiming their "piss-pot"
borowed from them during a July run, by Brain Damage and Gypsy. Other visitors
came from Pittsburgh, Toronto and one each from England and Australia plus
a nice turnout of locals for a total of about 45.
Mis-management committee for the first years consisted of Scorecard,
Brain Damage, Frenchy, Tinkerbell, Peewee the Camel, Rev. Poontang and
Gypsy amongst many others. Runs were generally held every other week including
special events, September weekends, Cana-Hash '92, '94, '96 and 1998. Canine's
Christmas Candy Cane Caravans is also a big favorite as were the summer
sails. Some of out members also run competitive running events including
the Boston, Detroit, Columbus Marathons as well as local races.
Sarnia
HHH members also travel to other hash club events in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania
and Canada
as well as the Americas and World Interhash. (Malasia in October 1998)
