Transportation is difficult as there are obviously no scheduled flights or boat-trips to uninhabited islands that nobody ever visits! All travel has to be independently arranged. Thus far, we have used chartered floatplanes, and freighter canoes piloted by Cree Indian guides. We hope, at some point, to travel by inflatable Zodiac boat but local assistance is invaluable as weather on the Bay is unpredictable.
Possible mainland departure points for charter aircraft or boats include Moosonee, Fort Albany, Attawapiskat, Eastmain, Waskaganish, Chisasibi, and Wemindji. Floatplane travel is quickest but allows only one island at a time to be surveyed. Boat travel allows whole island groups to be surveyed in one voyage.
Attempts will be made to travel on the supply barges that regularly travel on James Bay in summer, to record 'pelagic' species. Another possibility being investigated is the chartering of a fishing trawler for a trip from Moosonee to the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay and return.
